Being able to prove a biological relationship with a DNA test is often an essential step in the immigration process.
When a person applies to move to the UK in order to join their family members, they must be able to provide proof of a biological relationship between an applicant and a UK citizen in order to meet the requirements of the UK Border Agency. DNA testing is able to determine with absolute accuracy whether or not a biological relationship between two people exists.
As a parent, you can apply to live with your child in the UK. Your child must be under 18 when you apply and not live an independent life. They must also be a British citizen, or have settled in the UK and have proof of permanent residency. You can also apply to settle in the UK if you are a child and at least one of your parents has settled in the UK.
There are several DNA tests that can be taken in order to prove different types of biological relationships, including:
- Paternity testing to establish a relationship between a father and child
- Maternity testing to establish a relationship between a mother and a child
- Sibling testing to establish a relationship between two siblings
- Aunt/Uncle testing to establish a relationship between an aunt or uncle and their niece of nephew
- Extended family testing to establish how much distant relatives are biologically related, such as Grandparent testing
In the past, a birth certificate was sufficient to establish paternity between a father and a child, however, a recent change in law means you now are required to take a DNA test to prove a biological relationship. If the father was married to the mother at the time of birth, then a paternity test is not necessary.
When applying for a DNA test for immigration, visa, or passport applications, you must use a UKBA approved company to administer the testing. An accredited nurse or doctor will be required to administer the DNA test, which is a simple mouth swab. Therefore, a home DNA test will not suffice, as the samples can be tampered with. Once your mouth swab samples are collected, your samples will then be securely delivered to our laboratories for testing.
